Things to Know About Hawaii Islands

A string of islands collectively known as Hawaii make up the 50th state in the United States, but the largest of the islands in the string is also known as Hawaii which often causes some confusion. For a better differentiation, many simply name Hawaii island the big island. The islands of Hawaii are in reality the result of underground lava formation beginning in the base of the sea and building upwards until the magma extended above the depths of the Pacific Ocean.

There are eight inhabited islands in the chain of the Hawaii islands with many others tipping their faces out of the water, but due to size and resources are not populated. Nihau, the north west-most island of the chain is the smallest of the settled island and the big island is situated to the furthest southeast link in the chain of the Hawaii islands. Oahu is home to the state capital Honolulu as well as there are many things to do in Hawaii for vacationers, chosen by former ruler King Kamehamea due to the closeness of the natural harbor, now well-known as Honolulu Harbor.

Molokai, Kauai, Lanai and Kahoulawe are the other lands in the Hawaii islands and also including travelling to Maui. Between these islands transportation is possible by air or boat with the larger islands having airports taking large commercial airplane and others smaller, commuter aircraft.

With the islands of Hawaii beginnings traced back to barren lava growth, it is supposed that plants and animals were brought to the islands by wind streams, by flying birds and in the water. When the first human inhabitants arrived for Polynesia in about 500 A.D., plants and animals had already seized the island and recent conservation methods have assured the continued growing and good habitat for the native species.

The islands of Hawaii became an significant strategy for the Air Force and U.S. Navy, still before in 1941 Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. It’s still home to U.S. military bases, that provide a large population with opportunities for civilian jobs, it also features the memorials for the soldiers who perished in the attack.

Hawaii islands population has grown enormously, particularly since becoming a state in 1959, as the nose count in 1910 recorded a population of about 154,000. Habitants have raised to over 1.2 million in 2000. Hawaii vacation tours are an overwhelming journey to the only U.S. state completely surrounded by the sea and is located around 1,500 miles away from mainland at the west coast of California.
